Postbiotics, Explained: What They Are, What They Aren't, and What the Evidence Shows (2026)

TL;DR: A postbiotic is a preparation of inactivated microbes that does something useful for you. The official definition requires actual microbial cells or cell parts, which means a purified compound like butyrate technically sits just outside it. The word gets used loosely on labels. The human evidence is real but narrower than the marketing suggests.

Walk down a supplement aisle in 2026 and you'll see the word postbiotic on yogurt lids, capsule bottles, and drink sticks. It showed up fast. Most people using it can't define it, and a fair number of brands printing it can't either.

I've got a stake in this. Ozzi's own product page describes our butyrate as a postbiotic, and by the strictest reading of the scientific definition, that word is doing some stretching. So this post is partly me explaining a category and partly me being upfront about where our own label sits in the argument.

What is a postbiotic, exactly?

In 2019 the International Scientific Association for Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP) pulled together a panel of nutrition scientists, microbiologists, gastroenterologists, and food scientists to settle the term. Their consensus statement landed in Nature Reviews Gastroenterology & Hepatology in 2021.1

Their definition: "a preparation of inanimate microorganisms and/or their components that confers a health benefit on the host."

Three parts matter.

Inanimate. The microbes are dead. Heat-killed, pasteurized, tyndallized, sonicated, whatever the method. If they're alive, it's a probiotic.

And/or their components. Cell walls, cell fragments, and surface proteins count, because those pieces are what a lot of the immune signaling appears to run through.

Confers a health benefit. This is the part brands skip. Under the ISAPP framing, you can't call something a postbiotic just because you killed some bacteria. You need evidence that the specific preparation does something in a host.

Four words that get used interchangeably on labels and mean four different things.

How does a postbiotic differ from a probiotic or prebiotic?

The three terms describe completely different things, and the confusion is costing people money.

That fourth row is where the argument lives.

So is butyrate a postbiotic or not?

Under the ISAPP letter, no. The panel was explicit that metabolites alone don't satisfy the definition, and recommended that purified metabolites be called by their chemical names instead.1 Butyrate is a purified compound. There are no bacterial cells in it.

Under common industry and retail usage, yes. Butyrate is the flagship product of gut fermentation, and thousands of papers and product pages describe it as a postbiotic because it comes after the microbial work is done. That usage predates the ISAPP paper and hasn't gone anywhere since.

Two groups are using one word for two different things, and neither is going to stop.

Our position: we use the word because that's the shelf language customers search and shop with, and we'd rather define it here in plain sight than pretend the tension doesn't exist. If you want the precise version, the honest sentence is that Ozzi contains 500mg of butyrate as L-Lysine Butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid your gut bacteria normally produce. Why would anyone want dead bacteria?

Counterintuitive, sure. But killing the microbes solves several real problems.

Shelf stability. Live probiotics die on the way to you. Heat in a warehouse, humidity in a bathroom cabinet, months on a shelf. A product built from inactivated cells doesn't have that decay curve.

No colonization required. Live probiotic strains mostly pass through without setting up shop. If the benefit comes from the cell structure interacting with your gut lining and immune tissue, the cell doesn't need a pulse to do it.

Safety headroom. Inactivated preparations remove the (small but real) concern about giving live organisms to people with compromised immune systems or damaged gut barriers.

Measurement. This one is underrated. Probiotic dosing has always leaned on colony-forming units, which measures the cells that will grow on a plate rather than every cell present. Dead cells can't form colonies at all, so the postbiotic category had to move to counting methods like flow cytometry and quantitative PCR.2 That's arguably a more honest number.

The category grew faster than the labeling standards did.

What has actually been tested in humans?

Here's where I'd ask you to be picky. Postbiotic results are almost always strain-specific and preparation-specific. A finding for heat-killed strain KW3110 tells you nothing about a different heat-killed strain in a different pill.

A sample of what human trials have reported, with the populations named so you can judge whether they resemble you:

Notice the pattern. Most of these trials were designed and funded by the company selling the ingredient. That doesn't make them wrong, and it's normal in nutrition research where nobody else pays for the work. It does mean a single positive trial is a starting point, not a settled question.

Notice the last row too. Cell-culture findings show up constantly in postbiotic marketing with the dish quietly left out of the sentence. A tight-junction change in Caco-2 cells is a mechanism worth studying, and it's several steps away from a person feeling different.

What the research has actually studied: clinical populations

Some of the strongest postbiotic trials were run in patients under medical care. Those results belong in their own box, because they say nothing about what a supplement does for a generally healthy person.

In a multicenter trial in adults with functional dyspepsia who were positive for H. pylori, adding inactivated L. reuteri DSM 17648 to standard antibiotic eradication therapy raised eradication rates compared with placebo.8 That is a study of an antibiotic protocol with an adjunct, in diagnosed patients.

In a crossover trial of 110 adults with chronic constipation by Rome IV criteria, a multi-strain postbiotic preparation improved symptom and straining scores over three weeks, with shifts in stool metabolites including propionate and butyrate.9 Again: a diagnosed population, and a specific branded preparation.

Reviews of the category in inflammatory bowel disease reach the same cautious conclusion, which is that inactivated preparations and microbial metabolites are a promising research direction with trials that remain small and heterogeneous.10

If you have a diagnosed gut condition, this is a conversation for your doctor, not a supplement label.

Do postbiotics do anything for appetite or weight?

This is the question most people arrive with, so let me be careful.

The Akkermansia story is the most-cited one. Human studies consistently find that people with more Akkermansia muciniphila in their stool tend to be leaner and more insulin-sensitive. That's a correlation. It does not establish that adding the organism causes the difference.

Two randomized trials have gone further with the pasteurized (inactivated) version. The 2019 pilot in 32 overweight, insulin-resistant adults reported improved insulin sensitivity against placebo.3 A larger 2026 trial in 90 adults reported less weight regain across a 24-week maintenance phase after an initial low-energy diet, with co-authors from the company commercializing the strain.4

A separate 8-week trial fortified yogurt with an Akkermansia postbiotic and reported reductions in waist circumference and body fat percentage, plus lower appetite scores, against a low-fat yogurt control in 66 people with overweight or obesity.11 Sixty-six people, eight weeks, self-reported appetite. Interesting. Not conclusive.

The honest summary is a promising signal in small trials, repeated by marketing as if it were a settled mechanism.

How should you read a postbiotic label?

Four things worth checking before you spend money.

1. Is the strain named? "Postbiotic blend" tells you nothing. You want genus, species, and strain designation, like Lacticaseibacillus paracasei KW3110. The strain is the thing that was studied.

2. Is the inactivation method stated? Heat-killed, pasteurized, and tyndallized produce different cell fragments and can produce different effects.

3. Is there a real dose in real units? Cells per serving, or milligrams for a defined compound. If the label uses CFU for a dead-cell product, someone was careless, because CFU measures growth.2

4. Does the evidence match the exact preparation? A study on strain A in a dairy matrix is not evidence for strain B in a capsule.

Where does Ozzi fit in all this?

Ozzi isn't a bacterial preparation. There are no live or dead microbes in the stick. What's in there, on the gut side, is two things.

500mg of butyrate as L-Lysine Butyrate. Butyrate is the primary energy source for the cells lining your colon, and it's the compound your gut bacteria make when they ferment fiber. In the strict taxonomy above, this is a purified metabolite. In shelf language, it gets called a postbiotic. Both statements are on this page so you can decide which one you prefer.

500mg of chicory root inulin. A prebiotic fiber that feeds butyrate-producing bacteria, which is the same job from the other direction. More on that route in how to increase butyrate naturally.

One thing I won't tell you: that butyrate raises GLP-1 in humans. The mechanism people cite comes from rodent and cell studies of intestinal L-cells, and a human trial that successfully raised circulating butyrate measured GLP-1 as a secondary outcome and found no change. Anyone selling you a human GLP-1 claim for butyrate is ahead of the data. What's defensible is that butyrate supports gut barrier function, and we keep the language there. Postbiotic FAQ

Are postbiotics better than probiotics?
Neither category is better as a whole. They're different tools, and both are strain-specific. Postbiotics have real advantages in stability and shelf life. Probiotics have a much deeper trial record built over decades.

Do postbiotics need to be refrigerated?
Generally no, and that's one of the main reasons manufacturers like them. The cells are already inactivated, so there's no viability to preserve.

Is butyrate a postbiotic?
By the 2021 ISAPP definition, no, because purified metabolites without microbial cells fall outside it. In everyday supplement usage, yes. Both usages are common, so check what a given label means.

Are there postbiotics in food?
Yes, in a loose sense. Heat-treated fermented foods contain inactivated microbes and their components. Pasteurized sauerkraut and baked sourdough both qualify structurally, though nobody has run trials proving a specific benefit from those specific inactivated cells.

Can postbiotics cause side effects?
Reported tolerability in the trials above was good, with mild digestive complaints being the usual issue. Postbiotics are not risk-free simply because the microbes are dead, and if you're immunocompromised, pregnant, or on medication, ask your doctor.

How long until a postbiotic does anything?
Trial lengths in this space run from 3 weeks to 24 weeks. Anything promising a change in a few days is guessing.

Do postbiotics help with bloating?
The evidence is thin and mostly comes from people with diagnosed gut conditions. The healthy-adult pilot that measured digestive symptoms found minimal change in symptoms while stool markers shifted.5

Should I take a postbiotic and a prebiotic together?
There's no rule against it, and they operate through different routes. That combination is exactly what Ozzi does with butyrate plus inulin, though we'd point out that the combination itself hasn't been trialed head to head against either piece alone.

Does Ozzi contain live bacteria?
No. Ozzi is a drink stick, not a probiotic. It contains butyrate and prebiotic fiber, plus 8g of allulose and other actives on the appetite side.
