Healthy Snacks for Period Cravings: What to Eat Instead (2026)

By Brandon, founder of Ozzi

TL;DR: The best healthy snacks for period cravings have protein or fiber and still taste like what you wanted. You eat about 240 more calories a day before your period, so feed the craving well. Greek yogurt, dark chocolate with almonds, fruit with nut butter and a sweet drink after dinner cover most of it.

Key takeaways

  • Hunger rises about 240 calories a day before your period. Plan for it.
  • A 24 g protein yogurt snack kept women full almost an hour longer.
  • Dark chocolate satisfied a sweet craving better than milk chocolate.
  • Match the snack to the craving, or you will eat two snacks.
  • After dinner, a sweet drink can stand in for the snack.

Nobody craves celery the week before their period. You want chocolate, bread, chips, or all three in a bowl. This guide sorts snacks by the craving they answer, so you can find the one that works and skip the ones that leave you looking for something else ten minutes later.

What are the best snacks for period cravings? Snacks that pair the taste you want with protein or fiber. For chocolate: Greek yogurt with cocoa, or dark chocolate with almonds. For sweet: fruit with nut butter. For salty: popcorn or roasted chickpeas. For carbs: oatmeal or toast with eggs. Protein snacks keep you full longest.

Why are you hungrier before your period?

Food intake rises in the luteal phase, the two weeks before your period. A pooled analysis of 19 studies put the average increase at about 240 calories a day (Buffenstein 1995). Carbohydrate cravings are the ones reported most, especially in women with PMS (Dye and Blundell 1997).

Your stomach is part of it. In a small study of healthy women, the stomach emptied faster in the luteal phase, and hunger and the amount eaten at a buffet meal were both higher (Brennan 2009). A meal holds you for less time than it did two weeks ago.

So plan to eat a little more that week. A snack you chose beats one that chose you.

What makes a good snack for period cravings?

Four things. The more of them a snack has, the better it works.

  • Protein. In a trial in healthy women, a high-protein yogurt snack cut afternoon hunger, delayed the next meal by about 30 minutes and led to about 100 fewer calories at dinner compared with a chocolate snack of the same calories (Ortinau 2014). In a second trial, a Greek yogurt snack with 24 g of protein held women for 178 minutes before they asked for dinner, against 124 minutes with no snack (Douglas 2013).
  • Fiber. It slows things down, so the snack lasts.
  • Some fat. In a four-week trial of 137 adults, almonds eaten as a snack lowered the blood sugar response and reduced hunger and the desire to eat (Tan and Mattes 2013).
  • The taste you were after. A snack that ignores the craving just becomes the first of two snacks.

That last one is where most "healthy snack" lists fail. If you want chocolate and you eat carrots, you will eat the carrots and then the chocolate.

Which snack fits which craving?

If you want Try Why it works
Chocolate Greek yogurt with cocoa and berries; dark chocolate with almonds Real chocolate taste with protein or fat to slow it down
Something sweet Apple with nut butter; cottage cheese with pineapple Sweet plus protein, so the sugar lands gently
Salty and crunchy Popcorn; roasted chickpeas; crackers with hummus Crunch and salt with fiber
Bread and carbs Oatmeal with protein; toast with eggs The carb you want with something that keeps you full
Sweet after dinner A sweet drink; frozen grapes; yogurt with cinnamon Small, sweet and done

Healthy snacks for chocolate cravings

Close to half of American women report craving chocolate around the start of their period (Hormes 2017). You are in good company.

  • Greek yogurt with cocoa powder and berries
  • Two squares of dark chocolate with a handful of almonds
  • A banana with peanut butter and a few chocolate chips
  • Chocolate protein shake, blended with ice
  • Cottage cheese with cocoa and a drizzle of honey
  • Dark chocolate chips stirred into warm oatmeal

Go dark if you can. In a crossover study of 16 young men, dark chocolate left people more satisfied and less interested in something sweet than milk chocolate, and they ate 17% less at the next meal (Sørensen 2011). It was a small study in men, so treat it as a nudge. Two squares after a meal is a different experience than half a bar at 4pm on an empty stomach.

Healthy snacks for sweet cravings

  • Apple slices with nut butter
  • Cottage cheese with pineapple or peaches
  • Frozen grapes or frozen mango
  • Dates stuffed with almond butter (two is plenty)
  • Greek yogurt with honey and walnuts
  • A baked pear or apple with cinnamon and yogurt

Fruit on its own is fine. Fruit with protein or fat is better, because the sugar reaches your blood more slowly and the snack lasts longer.

Healthy snacks for salty and crunchy cravings

  • Popcorn with a little salt
  • Roasted chickpeas or edamame
  • Whole grain crackers with hummus or cheese
  • Pickles and turkey roll-ups
  • A small handful of salted nuts
  • Sliced cucumber and bell pepper with tzatziki

A lot of salty cravings are really crunch cravings. Popcorn gives you a big bowl for not many calories, which is exactly what you want when the urge is to keep your hands busy.

Healthy snacks for carb cravings

  • Oatmeal with protein powder stirred in
  • Toast with eggs or avocado
  • A small baked potato with Greek yogurt
  • Rice cakes with tuna or cottage cheese
  • A whole grain wrap with turkey and cheese
  • Overnight oats with chia seeds and berries

Do not fight a carb craving with zero carbs. Eat the carb and put protein next to it. Toast with eggs holds you for hours. Toast with jam holds you for about forty minutes.

5 period snacks you can make in five minutes

None of these need a recipe card. They need about five minutes and a bowl.

Chocolate yogurt bowl

Stir a spoonful of cocoa powder and a little honey or maple syrup into a cup of plain Greek yogurt. Top with berries and a few dark chocolate chips. It tastes like pudding and has more protein than most protein bars.

Apple nachos

Slice an apple thin and fan it out on a plate. Drizzle warm peanut or almond butter over it, then add a sprinkle of dark chocolate chips and chopped nuts. Sweet, crunchy and big enough to feel like a treat.

Salty-sweet popcorn

Pop a big bowl of popcorn, add salt, then toss in a small handful of dark chocolate chips while it is still warm. They melt just enough. This one covers salty, crunchy and chocolate at once.

Stuffed dates

Split two dates, take out the pits, fill each with almond butter and press a piece of dark chocolate or a pinch of flaky salt on top. Keep a few in the freezer. They taste like candy and two is a real serving.

Cottage cheese toast

Toast a slice of whole grain bread, spread it thick with cottage cheese, and top with sliced peaches and cinnamon, or with tomato, salt and pepper if you are in a salty mood. It is the carb you wanted with enough protein to hold you.

How big should a period snack be?

Bigger than you think, and smaller than a meal.

Your body is asking for roughly 240 more calories a day that week. One solid snack of 150 to 250 calories covers it. A 60-calorie rice cake does not, which is why it never works.

Aim for at least 10 to 15 g of protein when you can. A single-serve cup of Greek yogurt or a half cup of cottage cheese gets you there. Then add the thing that makes it taste like what you wanted.

What are good period snacks for work or on the go?

The afternoon craving usually shows up when you are nowhere near your kitchen. Keep two or three of these in your bag or desk:

  • A small bag of almonds with a few squares of dark chocolate
  • A single-serve Greek yogurt or cottage cheese cup
  • A banana and a nut butter packet
  • Roasted chickpeas or edamame
  • A protein bar with at least 10 g of protein and a short ingredient list
  • String cheese and an apple

The goal is to never be standing at a vending machine at 3pm with nothing else on offer.

Sticks travel. Keep a few in your bag for the week you need them.

When should you snack?

Timing matters as much as the snack.

  • Mid-afternoon, around 3pm. This is the one that pays off. Both protein snack trials above gave the snack in the afternoon and measured what happened at dinner.
  • After dinner, if you want it. Plan it. A chosen sweet thing at 8pm is a snack. An unplanned one at 10pm is usually three.
  • Not instead of meals. Grazing through the day and skipping dinner sets up the biggest craving of all.

What about cravings after dinner?

This is where most period cravings win. You have eaten, you are not hungry, and you still want something sweet.

Ozzi is made for that moment. It is a sweet drink stick you take after dinner, in place of the snack, with 8g of allulose and six actives that support your body's natural GLP-1. It has no caffeine. Ozzi is a cravings product. It does not treat PMS or period symptoms.

We built it around the idea that a craving needs an answer, not a lecture. Here is what is in it and why.

Allulose: the something sweet

Allulose is a rare sugar that tastes like sugar with about a tenth of the calories. In healthy adults, 5 g or more taken with a carbohydrate load lowered the rise in blood glucose and insulin (Iida 2008). In a double-blind crossover trial of 18 healthy adults, 25 g caused a significant release of GLP-1, PYY and CCK, the gut hormones that signal fullness (Teysseire 2022). One stick has 8g.

Konjac fiber: the part that makes it last

Glucomannan from konjac root forms a gel in water. Across 14 trials it lowered fasting blood glucose and body weight (Sood 2008). It is the fiber in the snack rule above, in a glass.

Chromium: studied in women who crave carbs

In an eight-week trial of 42 overweight women who craved carbohydrates, chromium picolinate reduced food intake, hunger and fat cravings compared with placebo (Anton 2008). Ozzi uses a different form of chromium at a lower dose than that study.

The formula also has BIOMEnd butyrate, ursolic acid and African mango. The full breakdown is in supplements for period cravings and what's inside Ozzi.

What should you keep in the house for period week?

Shop before the week starts. Cravings go badly when the only fast option is the worst one.

  • Fridge: Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, eggs, hummus, berries, apples.
  • Freezer: frozen grapes, frozen mango, frozen berries for shakes.
  • Shelf: dark chocolate, almonds, popcorn kernels, oats, nut butter, dates, rice cakes.
  • On the counter: bananas, and whatever you plan to have after dinner.

If the dark chocolate and almonds are closer than the cookies, you will eat the dark chocolate and almonds most nights. That is the whole strategy.

Take it with you. No flavor to choose. No powder to mix. Take with at least 12 oz of water. Capsule illustration; actual capsules may differ.

Ozzi also comes as a capsule, for days when a drink does not fit.

Which snacks make period cravings worse?

  • Candy on its own. Fast sugar, fast drop, and the craving is back within the hour.
  • "Diet" versions of what you wanted. If it does not taste like the real thing, you will eat it and then eat the real thing.
  • Nothing. Skipping the snack to be good is the most reliable way to overeat at 9pm.
  • Eating from the bag. Put it in a bowl. You will eat less and enjoy it more.

You do not have to give any food up for good. Have the cookie after dinner, with a meal behind it, and it is a cookie. Have it at 4pm instead of lunch and it is the start of a long evening.

What if snacks are not enough?

Then look at the rest of the day. Most runaway cravings trace back to a small breakfast, a skipped lunch or a bad night of sleep. Our guide to stopping period cravings covers the full plan, and estrogen and appetite explains why your hunger moves with your cycle.

If cravings come with bingeing, or with mood changes that disrupt your life each month, talk to your doctor. Severe premenstrual symptoms can be PMDD, which needs medical care.

Frequently asked questions

What should I eat when I have period cravings?
Eat something that matches the craving and add protein or fiber to it. Chocolate with almonds, fruit with nut butter, popcorn, Greek yogurt or oatmeal all work. Skipping the craving usually leads to eating more later.

Why do I crave junk food on my period?
Your body wants more food before your period, about 240 extra calories a day on average, and carbohydrate cravings are the most common kind. Junk food is just the fastest way to get carbs, fat and salt at once.

Is it okay to eat chocolate on your period?
Yes. Close to half of American women crave chocolate around the start of their period. Dark chocolate with nuts or yogurt is more filling than a milk chocolate bar on its own.

What snacks help with period cravings at night?
Something small and sweet with protein, like Greek yogurt with berries or cottage cheese with fruit. If you are not actually hungry and just want something sweet, a sweet drink after dinner can take the place of the snack.

How many extra calories do you need before your period?
Studies put the average rise in food intake at about 240 calories a day in the two weeks before your period, with more in some women. That is roughly one solid snack.

What foods make period cravings worse?
Sugar on an empty stomach is the main one. It spikes blood sugar, then drops it, and the drop brings the craving back. Skipping meals does the same thing by a different route.

Do healthy snacks actually stop period cravings?
They make them smaller and easier to answer. In a study of healthy women, an afternoon protein snack cut hunger and led to about 100 fewer calories at dinner. The craving does not vanish, but it stops running the evening.

Can I drink Ozzi for period cravings?
Yes. Ozzi is a sweet, caffeine-free drink stick you take after dinner in place of the snack, with 8g of allulose and six actives that support your body's natural GLP-1. It is a cravings product. It does not treat PMS or period symptoms.
