Appetite & Metabolism

The Fourth Meal Nobody Counts

You aren't failing at the gym. You're undoing it between 9pm and 11pm, in food you never counted as a meal.

There's a number near the bottom of this page that explains where your progress goes. It isn't the number you're expecting, and it isn't on the scale.

The Ozzi Team · 7 min read · Updated August 30, 2026

Start at 9:41pm

9:41 PM

You're finally finished for the day. The kitchen's clean, the dishwasher's running, and you sit down on the couch to relax.

There's nothing more frustrating than doing the work and getting none of the results.

You go to the gym 4 days a week and you've been going for months. You eat a real breakfast, you cut back on bread, and you take the stairs. On paper you're doing everything you're supposed to be doing.

And the scale hasn't moved in 5 months.

So you land on one of two conclusions. Either your metabolism is broken, or you aren't trying hard enough. And both send you the wrong way, one toward giving up and one toward a fifth gym day that won't help either.

There's a third explanation, and it's boring, which is probably why nobody leads with it.

500

Calories a day US adults eat in snacks. On a 2,000-calorie day that's a quarter of everything you eat.

Taylor et al., PLOS Global Public Health, 2023, 23,708 US adults. Snacks ran 400 to 500 calories a day, and 19.5% to 22.4% of total intake.

Read it as a training problem

An hour of cardio, eaten back on the couch

500 calories is about what an hour of moderate cardio burns, and it's roughly what you're eating after dinner without logging a bite of it.

So you're eating back a full workout every single day, in food you don't think of as a meal, at a time of day you aren't paying attention.

That's the fourth meal. It never gets logged, it never gets planned, and it's almost exactly the size of the deficit you built that morning.

Nobody writes this down, and that's the problem.

9:52 PM

The show's started. You ate an hour ago and you're not hungry. You get up anyway.

The window

It isn't your whole day. It's two hours.

A 2023 survey of 1,250 US adults found that 93% eat an after-dinner snack at least once a week, and the average person does it 3.9 nights a week. Almost 70% of those snacks land within 2 hours of finishing dinner, so if you're picturing your own evening right now, you're picturing the right one.

93%

3.9
Nights per week, on average.
70%

So this isn't a discipline problem spread across your whole day. It's one window, and it's the same window most nights, between finishing dinner and going to bed.

And that's oddly good news, because all-day problems are hard but a recurring 2-hour problem is a target.

Why that window beats you

Three things stack up, and they stack against you

It's automatic, not chosen

You never decide to snack after dinner. You finish eating, the TV goes on, and 40 minutes later you're already holding something. The decision happened before you were consciously in the room, so telling yourself "not tonight" at 9pm is arguing with something you set in motion at 8:15.

Your resistance is at its floor

After a full day of decisions your ability to override an urge is spent, and that's why you can say no to the donuts at 10am and yes to ice cream at 10pm without a second thought.

And the third one

The third one is the one almost nobody names, and it's the only one you can actually change tonight. It comes after the mechanism, further down.

In their own words

Not hungry. Just eating.

"Like you, I can be stellar all day long but the monster comes out at night!"

Ozzi customer survey

"Because after huge dinner that I finished at 9:00 I was snacking again at 10:30!"

"I binge eat in the evenings all the way up to bedtime!! I'm not hungry, I know this."

You're standing in front of the open fridge, and you don't remember deciding to walk over.

The reframe

Your cravings aren't really a willpower problem. They're a hormone problem.

Appetite runs on chemistry, not your character. GLP-1, PYY, leptin, blood sugar stability. These are the signals that tell your brain you've had enough, and when they're weak or quiet no amount of discipline manufactures the feeling of being full. You just get to be uncomfortable and eat anyway.

This is why GLP-1 medications work the way they do. They don't make anyone more disciplined, they just turn up a signal, and the urge to eat quiets down on its own.

And it's also why "just have more discipline" has failed you every time you've tried it. It's aimed at the wrong system.

Chart contrasting physical hunger and hormone-driven craving across four signs each, including onset speed and where it is felt
Physical hunger builds slowly and settles in the stomach. A hormone-driven craving arrives fast and sits in the head.

Where GLP-1 comes from

Your body already makes it. Most diets just don't ask.

GLP-1 is produced by L-cells in your intestine. One of the things that stimulates those L-cells is butyrate, a short-chain fatty acid your gut bacteria produce when they ferment fiber.

More butyrate in the gut means more L-cell activity, and more GLP-1 and PYY. That pathway is already in you, and it works whether or not you ever buy anything.

Diagram showing how the gut makes butyrate: fiber is fermented by gut bacteria into butyrate, which fuels the cells lining the colon
Fiber goes in, bacteria ferment it, butyrate comes out and fuels the cells lining your gut.

The practical problem is that your diet probably doesn't produce much butyrate. It comes from fermentable fiber, and that's the part of the American diet that got stripped out first.

10:31 PM

Second trip. You told yourself no on the first one, and here you are anyway.

The third thing

Your signal is quiet at exactly the hour you need it loudest

That's the one nobody names. Not the habit, and not the tiredness. Your fullness signal is weakest late in the evening, hours after your last real fiber, when there's nothing left in your gut to keep the L-cells firing.

Which is why the fix that works isn't a new rule at 9pm. It's putting something in that window that turns your signal back up.

You don't need more discipline at 10:31pm. You need a signal that's still awake.

14-Day Ozzi Challenge

Take it for 14 straight days. If your cravings and food noise aren't quieter, we'll refund your first bag.

How to use

Since Ozzi is caffeine and sugar free, you can take it at any time your cravings start to hit.

Mix Ozzi with 16-20oz of chilled water.

If you'd like some bubbles, mix with about 4oz of still water, then pour sparkling water on top slowly to avoid foam spilling over.

Pro tip: use daily for best results. Start with half a stick if you have a sensitive gut.

What to expect

Day 1: Allulose satisfies your sweet tooth without spiking blood sugar, and the fiber starts to fill you up, so the 9pm pull gets weaker.

Day 7: Butyrate is feeding your gut lining and the cells behind your fullness hormones. You might notice a steadier appetite and fewer "I'm not even hungry" snack runs.

Day 30: Ozzi supports your body's natural GLP-1 and PYY, plus a healthy blood-sugar response. Less food goes further.

Month 2+: Reaching for Ozzi instead of the snack drawer is just what you do now.

Based on ingredient mechanisms. Individual results vary.

What's in it

Six clinically studied actives in every stick:

500mg L-Lysine Butyrate (BIOMEnd) delivers butyrate directly, so the L-cells get stimulated without waiting on your diet to produce it.

500mg glucomannan from konjac root absorbs water and expands in the stomach. FDA-recognized for appetite support.

8g allulose, a rare sugar that tastes like sugar with about a tenth of the calories and no glucose or insulin spike.

150mg African mango extract, studied for its effect on leptin.

300mcg chromium in Metabolex, bound to ursolic acid, for blood sugar support.

5 calories. 0g sugar. No caffeine, no stimulants, no berberine, no artificial sweeteners. Vegan.

Allergies

Free from dairy, nuts, soy, monk fruit and stevia. Despite the name, African mango (Irvingia gabonensis) isn't related to common mango and doesn't carry urushiol, the compound behind most mango skin reactions.

Most buyers say it helps with cravings and the urge to snack at night.

Some buyers mention the powder smells strong when the pouch is opened, which comes from butyrate, our most powerful ingredient.

Many buyers also say the flavors taste good once the powder is mixed and that the smell does not carry into the drink.

  13. I just started taking Ozzi. But I'm so glad I have!! I bought one tart flavor (Cherry Limeade) and one sweet (Peach Elderflower).
I'm glad for the heads-up about the slight funky scent, because that would have been a turn off if I wasn't ready.
I notice the funkiness more in the limeade, but it's not terrible.
And in the peach? Oh, it's just a lightly sweet drink. I enjoy it, and I'm glad to have this as a healthy choice tool.

  19. I’ve been trying my best to lose 20 to 25lbs and quite literally have had the hardest time and that’s because after I eat a meal I crave something sweet especially at night after I’m off work and once I saw the Ozzi product info I was curious. Mind you i actually started taking this around the time I was due for my monthly cycle which is when my cravings kick in the hardest! And to my surprise I noticed my cravings subsided and my brain was able to stop the noise of falling hard for the cravings even when I wasn’t hungry. I’ll continue to use this product and see how things go!! But I’m off to a great start!

  20. Really works! I can usually control my cravings until the night time hunger hits. I've been having 1 Ozzi drink after dinner and I have been able to stop my night time snacking which has finally made it possible to budge the scale back a bit. I'm def ordering more.

Not the calories. The days.

The number that decides this isn't 500, and it isn't what your scale says on any given morning. It's 14. Fourteen consecutive evenings in the same window.

A week doesn't test anything, because your habit is older than a week and the signal takes time to come back up. Two straight weeks tests both at once.
